Two diamonds with identical specs on paper can have different prices — sometimes by thousands of dollars. Here is how to compare diamond prices fairly and understand why prices vary.
Why “Same Specs” Does Not Mean Same Price
Diamond grading is a range, not a point. Two diamonds both graded G/VS2 can look different because:
- Cut quality within the grade: Both may be "Excellent" cut, but one may have ideal proportions while another is at the edge of the Excellent range
- Position within the color grade: One G-color might be a strong G (almost F), the other a weak G (almost H)
- Inclusion position: Two SI1 diamonds — one has inclusions hidden under a prong, the other has a dark crystal under the table
- Fluorescence: Diamonds with strong fluorescence are typically discounted 5–15%
- Carat weight precision: A 1.01ct diamond costs noticeably more than a 0.99ct despite looking identical
How to Compare Fairly
To do an apples-to-apples comparison across retailers:
- Match the grading lab. Only compare GIA-to-GIA or IGI-to-IGI. Comparing a GIA G to an EGL G is meaningless — they are different actual qualities.
- Match ALL specs. Shape, carat, color, clarity, cut grade, polish, symmetry. Do not compare a 1.01ct to a 1.05ct — the price difference per carat at milestone weights is steep.
- Check fluorescence. If one diamond has None and the other has Strong Blue, the Strong Blue one should be cheaper. If it is not, you are overpaying.
- Compare total cost. Some retailers advertise a low diamond price but charge high setting prices, shipping fees, or mandatory insurance. Compare total out-the-door cost.
- Factor in the return policy. A slightly cheaper diamond with a 7-day return window is riskier than a slightly more expensive one with 30 days.
Price Factors: What Costs More & Less
| Costs More |
Costs Less |
| Round brilliant shape (+15–30% vs fancy shapes) | Fancy shapes (oval, cushion, pear, marquise) |
| Exact milestone weights (1.00, 1.50, 2.00) | Just-under weights (0.90, 1.40, 1.90) |
| No fluorescence | Medium or strong fluorescence (5–15% discount) |
| GIA certification (slightly higher priced than IGI) | IGI certification (slight market discount vs GIA) |
| Triple Excellent (cut + polish + symmetry) | Very Good polish or symmetry (minimal visual difference) |
| Natural diamond | Lab-grown diamond (60–80% less) |
Value hack: A 0.90ct G/VS2 Excellent-cut diamond with faint fluorescence can cost 25–35% less than a 1.00ct G/VS2 None-fluorescence diamond — with zero visible difference on the finger. Smart shoppers know where the price breaks are and shop just below them.
Hidden Costs to Watch For
- Shipping fees: Some retailers charge $50–$150 for insured shipping
- Setting markup: Low diamond price + overpriced setting = same total cost
- Mandatory appraisal: Some charge $50–$100 for an appraisal you did not ask for
- Return shipping cost: Who pays if you return? Some deduct return shipping from refund
- Restocking fees: Some charge 5–15% restocking — this is a red flag
