Ring Size Guide
How to measure your ring size at home, convert between sizing systems, and get the perfect fit every time.
How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home
You do not need to visit a jeweler to find your ring size. The paper strip method below is accurate, free, and takes less than two minutes.
Method 1: Paper Strip (Most Accurate)
- Cut a thin strip of paper about 6 inches long and ½ inch wide.
- Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you plan to wear the ring on — not too tight, not loose.
- Mark the point where the paper overlaps with a pen or pencil.
- Lay the strip flat and measure the marked length in millimeters.
- Compare to the size chart below to find your US ring size.
Pro tip: Measure at the end of the day in normal room temperature. Fingers are slightly larger in the evening and in warm weather — sizing to your largest measurement ensures the ring will always fit comfortably.
Method 2: Existing Ring
If you have a ring that fits the correct finger, place it flat on a ruler and measure the inside diameter (the distance across the hollow center) in millimeters. Then use the diameter column in the chart below.
Important: Different fingers on the same hand can be different sizes. Always measure the specific finger on the specific hand you plan to wear the ring on. The ring finger on the right hand is often slightly different from the left.

Ring Sizing Tips
When to Measure
- Best time: Late afternoon or evening — fingers are at their natural largest size.
- Avoid: First thing in the morning (fingers are smaller), after exercise, or in very cold weather.
- Room temperature: Fingers shrink noticeably in cold — always measure in a warm room.
If You Are Between Sizes
When your measurement falls between two ring sizes, the general rule is:
- For narrow bands (under 4mm): choose the smaller size — narrow bands slide off more easily.
- For wide bands (6mm or wider): choose the larger size — wide bands fit tighter and are harder to remove.
- For engagement rings and comfort-fit styles: size up for day-to-day comfort.
Ordering an Engagement Ring as a Surprise
If you are ordering a surprise engagement ring, here are ways to estimate size without spoiling the proposal:
- Borrow a ring your partner already wears on their ring finger and trace the inside on paper.
- Ask a close friend or family member who might know.
- Order a size 6 or 7 (the two most common women's sizes) — most rings can be resized 1–2 sizes after the proposal.
Note about resizing: Most gold and platinum rings can be resized 1–2 sizes larger or smaller by a professional jeweler for $30–$100. Full eternity bands (diamonds all the way around) generally cannot be resized — if ordering an eternity band as a gift, it is critical to know the exact size in advance.
Rings That Cannot Be Resized
- Full eternity bands with stones all the way around
- Tungsten carbide rings (too hard to cut)
- Titanium rings
- Rings with elaborate patterns running the length of the band
- Some tension-set rings
