Buyer's Guide: VS1 Clarity Diamonds
If there is one clarity grade that diamond experts recommend more than any other, it is VS1. The reason is simple: VS1 diamonds are always eye-clean — no inclusions are visible to the naked eye under any normal viewing conditions — yet they cost significantly less than VVS, IF, and FL grades. This makes VS1 the undisputed sweet spot for engagement rings and fine jewelry, offering the perfect balance between certified quality and real-world value.
Why Experts Recommend VS1
The inclusions in a VS1 diamond are minor (small crystals, feathers, or clouds) and difficult to locate even under 10x magnification. They have zero impact on the diamond's brilliance, fire, or durability. Since the human eye cannot detect these characteristics without magnification, a VS1 diamond looks identical to a VVS1 or IF stone when worn as jewelry. The savings — often 15-30% compared to VVS1 — can be reinvested in a larger carat weight or a superior cut, both of which have a far greater impact on the diamond's visual beauty than climbing the clarity scale.
VS1 for Every Shape
VS1 works beautifully across all diamond shapes. For brilliant cuts like round, oval, cushion, and pear, VS1 is more than sufficient — the complex facet patterns disperse light in ways that make inclusions impossible to detect. For step-cut shapes like emerald and asscher, VS1 is still an excellent choice for stones under 2 carats. Above 2 carats in a step cut, some buyers prefer VVS2 for extra assurance, but VS1 remains eye-clean in the vast majority of cases.
Maximize Your Budget with VS1
The smartest strategy for most diamond buyers is to select VS1 clarity and allocate the savings toward the two Cs that matter most visually: cut and carat weight. An Excellent-cut 1.5-carat VS1 will dramatically outperform a Good-cut 1.2-carat VVS1 in sparkle, presence, and beauty.
