A diamond certificate — also called a grading report — is one of the most important documents you will receive when purchasing a diamond. It is an unbiased, expert assessment of your diamond's quality characteristics, issued by an independent gemological laboratory. Think of it as your diamond's report card, passport, and proof of identity all rolled into one.
In this guide, we explain why certification matters, compare the major grading labs, and help you understand exactly what each report tells you about your diamond.
Why Diamond Certification Matters
Without an independent grading report, you are relying entirely on the seller's description of a diamond's quality. That creates an obvious conflict of interest — the seller benefits from describing the diamond as favorably as possible. An independent certificate removes that ambiguity and gives you objective data from a lab that has no financial stake in the sale.
Certification matters for several practical reasons:
- Price verification: Diamond prices are based on the 4Cs. Without a certificate, you have no way to verify that the quality matches the price you are paying.
- Insurance: Most insurance companies require an independent grading report to insure a diamond.
- Resale: Certified diamonds are significantly easier to sell and command higher prices than uncertified stones.
- Peace of mind: You know exactly what you are getting — no guesswork, no ambiguity.
The Major Diamond Grading Laboratories
Not all grading labs are created equal. The three most respected and widely used laboratories are GIA, AGS, and IGI. Here is how they compare:
| Feature |
GIA |
AGS |
IGI |
| Founded | 1931 | 1934 | 1975 |
| Headquarters | Carlsbad, CA | Las Vegas, NV | Antwerp, Belgium |
| Reputation | Gold standard worldwide | Premier for cut quality | Leader for lab-grown |
| Grading Consistency | Excellent — very strict | Excellent — very strict | Good — slightly more lenient |
| Cut Grading | Excellent to Poor (5 grades) | Ideal 0 to 10 (11 grades) | Ideal to Poor (5 grades) |
| Best Known For | Creating the 4Cs system | Ideal cut grading | Lab-grown diamond reports |
| Natural Diamonds | Industry standard | Highly trusted | Widely used |
| Lab-Grown Diamonds | Full reports since 2020 | Full reports available | Market leader |
| Online Verification | Yes (gia.edu) | Yes (ags.org) | Yes (igi.org) |
There are other grading labs in the market — EGL International, HRD Antwerp, and various regional labs — but GIA, AGS, and IGI are the three we recommend. EGL in particular has developed a reputation for inconsistent grading that tends to overstate quality, which means you may pay more than a diamond is actually worth if you rely on an EGL report.
Certified vs. Uncertified Diamonds
You may encounter uncertified diamonds at lower prices and wonder if they are worth the savings. Here is the straightforward answer: certified diamonds are almost always the better buy. An uncertified diamond selling for less may actually be a worse deal because you have no way to verify its true quality. A diamond sold as "H color, VS2 clarity" by a retailer without independent certification could actually be J color, SI2 clarity — and priced accordingly, you would be overpaying.
Certified diamonds also carry better resale value and are easier to insure. The small premium you pay for certification is one of the wisest investments in the diamond buying process.
Which Lab Should You Choose?
For natural diamonds, GIA and AGS are considered the most reliable. A GIA report is the most universally recognized and accepted in the industry. If cut quality is your top priority, an AGS report with its detailed 0-10 Ideal cut grading provides even more precision than GIA's system.
For lab-grown diamonds, IGI has become the dominant certifier and provides reliable, consistent reports. GIA also now issues full grading reports for lab-grown diamonds and is an excellent choice.
