Excellent Cut Diamonds

Excellent cut diamonds represent the top 3% of diamond cutting quality. Every facet is precisely angled to maximize light return — delivering exceptional fire, brilliance, and scintillation. An Excellent cut diamond will outperform lower grades in every lighting condition, making cut the single most important factor in a diamond's visual beauty.

Excellent Very Good Good

Why Excellent Cut Is the #1 Diamond Recommendation

Of all the 4Cs — cut, color, clarity, and carat — cut is the single factor that has the greatest impact on a diamond's beauty. An Excellent cut diamond is engineered so that virtually every ray of light entering through the crown is reflected back to your eye, producing maximum brilliance (white light), fire (spectral colors), and scintillation (sparkle as the stone moves). This is why gemologists and experienced buyers consistently recommend prioritizing cut above everything else.

What Makes a Cut "Excellent"

GIA awards Excellent cut only to round brilliant diamonds whose table percentage, crown angle, pavilion angle, girdle thickness, and culet size all fall within the tightest tolerances. Symmetry and polish must also be Very Good or Excellent. When all three — cut, symmetry, and polish — earn Excellent grades, the diamond is called Triple Excellent (3EX), and it represents the absolute pinnacle of diamond cutting. A subset of 3EX stones exhibit the coveted Hearts & Arrows optical pattern, confirming perfect optical symmetry.

Smart Budget Strategy: Compromise on Color and Clarity, Never on Cut

Because an Excellent cut diamond maximizes light return, it can actually mask slight tints in color and minor inclusions. A well-cut G-H color diamond will often appear whiter than a poorly cut D-E color stone, and a VS1 clarity diamond with Excellent cut will sparkle just as brightly as an internally flawless stone. This means you can confidently move down one or two grades in color or clarity to afford Excellent cut — and end up with a more visually stunning diamond for the same budget. Excellent Cut for Fancy Shapes

GIA does not assign an overall cut grade to fancy shapes like oval, cushion, or emerald. For these shapes, look for Excellent symmetry and polish on the lab certificate, and evaluate proportions using shape-specific guidelines in our shape guide. If you are shopping for a round brilliant, Excellent cut is always the top recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Excellent cut diamonds.

What makes a diamond Excellent cut? +
GIA grades cut based on a combination of proportions (table %, crown angle, pavilion angle, girdle thickness) plus symmetry and polish. Only round brilliants whose measurements all fall within the tightest tolerances earn the Excellent grade. The result is a diamond that returns virtually all incoming light through the crown, producing maximum brilliance, fire, and scintillation.
Is Excellent cut the same as Ideal cut? +
Not exactly. "Ideal" is a cut grade used by AGS (American Gem Society) and corresponds roughly to GIA's Excellent, but the grading scales differ slightly. GIA does not use the term "Ideal." Both grades signify the highest level of cut quality, and diamonds earning either grade will deliver outstanding light performance. At USA Jewels, we carry GIA, IGI, and HRD certified diamonds.
How does Excellent cut affect a diamond's sparkle? +
An Excellent cut diamond is proportioned so that light enters through the crown, bounces between precisely angled pavilion facets, and exits back through the top. This maximizes three types of sparkle: brilliance (broad flashes of white light), fire (rainbow spectral colors), and scintillation (the pattern of light and dark as the diamond moves). Lower cut grades allow more light to leak through the sides or bottom, resulting in noticeably less sparkle.
Can fancy shapes receive an Excellent cut grade? +
GIA assigns an overall cut grade only to round brilliant diamonds. For fancy shapes like oval, princess, emerald, and cushion, look for Excellent symmetry and polish on the certificate and evaluate proportions using our shape guide.
Is Triple Excellent (3EX) worth the premium? +
Triple Excellent means the diamond earned Excellent grades for cut, symmetry, and polish — all three categories. A 3EX diamond typically costs 5-10% more than a stone with Excellent cut but Very Good symmetry/polish. For most buyers, the visual difference is minimal, but 3EX is preferred for Hearts & Arrows collectors and those who want the absolute best on paper. It also supports stronger resale value.
How does GIA grade diamond cut? +
GIA evaluates seven components: brightness, fire, scintillation, weight ratio, durability, polish, and symmetry. These are measured using advanced optical instruments and then combined into a single grade from Excellent to Poor. The system applies only to standard round brilliants in the D-to-Z color range. You can read the full methodology in our 4Cs education guide. For fancy shapes, check our pricing guide to understand how proportions affect value.
