Here are specific color and clarity recommendations based on your budget, the diamond shape you want, and the metal you are choosing. These are the combinations that professional diamond buyers use — maximizing visible beauty while minimizing cost on grades that do not affect what you see.
By Budget (Natural Diamonds, Round Brilliant)
| Budget (Diamond Only) |
Approx. Carat |
Color |
Clarity |
Cut |
| $1,000–$1,500 | 0.40–0.55ct | H–I | SI1 | Excellent |
| $1,500–$2,500 | 0.55–0.75ct | G–H | SI1 | Excellent |
| $2,500–$4,000 | 0.75–0.95ct | G–H | VS2–SI1 | Excellent |
| $4,000–$6,000 | 0.90–1.15ct | G | VS2 | Excellent |
| $6,000–$9,000 | 1.15–1.50ct | F–G | VS2–VS1 | Excellent |
| $9,000–$15,000 | 1.50–2.00ct | F–G | VS1 | Excellent |
| $15,000+ | 2.00ct+ | E–F | VVS2–VS1 | Excellent |
By Budget (Lab-Grown Diamonds, Round Brilliant)
| Budget (Diamond Only) |
Approx. Carat |
Color |
Clarity |
Cut |
| $500–$800 | 0.75–1.00ct | G–H | VS2 | Excellent |
| $800–$1,500 | 1.00–1.50ct | F–G | VS2–VS1 | Excellent |
| $1,500–$2,500 | 1.50–2.00ct | F–G | VS1 | Excellent |
| $2,500–$4,000 | 2.00–3.00ct | E–F | VVS2–VS1 | Excellent |
| $4,000+ | 3.00ct+ | D–E | VVS2 | Excellent |
Notice the difference: With lab-grown diamonds, the same budget gets you significantly better grades across the board. A $2,000 lab diamond can have specs that would cost $8,000+ in natural. The diamonds look identical — only the origin differs.

Three Rules for Maximizing Value
- Never pay for grades you cannot see. The jump from VS2 to VVS1 adds $1,000–$2,000 per carat with zero visible benefit. That money is better spent on a higher carat weight or a better cut.
- Match color to your metal. Yellow and rose gold settings mask body color. If you choose warm metal, drop 2–3 color grades and save hundreds.
- Buy just under milestone weights. A 0.90ct G/VS2 is visually identical to a 1.00ct G/VS2 but costs 15–20% less. The same applies at 1.50ct, 2.00ct, etc.
