Proper storage prevents the most common types of jewelry damage: scratches, tangles, tarnish, and lost pieces. How you store your jewelry is just as important as how you clean it.
The Golden Rule: Separate Everything
Diamonds can scratch gold. Gold can scratch silver. Chains can tangle with other chains. The single most important storage principle is to keep pieces separated from each other. Each piece should have its own compartment, pouch, or slot.
Storage by Jewelry Type
Rings: Store in individual ring slots in a jewelry box or in the original box the ring came in. Never toss multiple rings into a bowl or tray where they can scratch each other. For engagement rings with raised settings, store the ring on its side or in a padded slot where the center stone will not press against other surfaces.
Necklaces and chains: Hang necklaces individually on hooks or use a necklace organizer with individual compartments. If storing flat, fasten clasps and lay each chain separately. Tangled chains require pulling and tugging to separate, which can weaken links and clasps over time.
Earrings: Store pairs together in small compartments or on an earring organizer. For stud earrings, push the backs on and store in pairs. For dangle earrings, lay flat in separate compartments to prevent tangling.
Bracelets: Store flat in individual compartments or hang from hooks. Tennis bracelets and delicate chains should be stored flat to prevent stress on clasps and links.
Preventing Tarnish
Sterling silver tarnishes when exposed to air, humidity, and certain chemicals. To minimize tarnish:
- Store silver in anti-tarnish bags or cloth-lined jewelry boxes
- Include silica gel packets or anti-tarnish strips in your storage
- Seal zip-top bags with as much air removed as possible if anti-tarnish options are not available
- Avoid storing jewelry in bathrooms where humidity is high
Travel Storage
When traveling, use a padded travel jewelry case with individual compartments. Never pack jewelry loose in a bag. Wrap delicate pieces in soft cloth. Keep valuable pieces in your carry-on luggage, never in checked bags.
