The Four C's of Diamonds
The universal language for evaluating diamond quality and value.
Every diamond is unique, shaped by nature over billions of years. To evaluate and compare diamonds consistently, gemologists use four primary criteria known as The Four C's: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight. These four characteristics together determine a diamond's rarity, beauty, and value.
The system was created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the 1950s and has since become the worldwide standard for diamond grading. Understanding the 4Cs empowers you to make an informed decision and find the diamond that is perfect for your budget and preferences.
Beyond the 4Cs
While the 4Cs are the foundation of diamond evaluation, several other factors influence a diamond's appearance and value:
- Shape — The outline of the diamond (round, oval, cushion, etc.). Shape is a matter of personal preference, not quality.
- Symmetry — How precisely the facets align. Affects the evenness of light reflection.
- Polish — How smooth the surface of each facet is. Affects how cleanly light enters and exits the stone.
- Fluorescence — Some diamonds emit a visible glow (usually blue) under UV light. Strong fluorescence can make a diamond appear hazy in rare cases, but faint to medium fluorescence has no negative effect and can even improve the perceived color of lower-grade stones.
The key to finding your perfect diamond is deciding which characteristics matter most to you. Some buyers prioritize size, others sparkle, and others want the highest color grade. There is no single "best" diamond — only the best diamond for your taste and budget.
